What is your favorite game made by Taito?

Taito was an absolute powerhouse when it came to arcade games and console ports. But now they sort have faded into obscurity. So which game (developed or owned by) Taito are you most inclined to go back and replay?
I love me some Arkanoid R 2000.

Taito's still around; they just released a new game in my favorite series of theirs, Puzzle Bobble.

Sadly, they have to do everything under the controls of Square Enix

I forgot elevator action was made by Taito. Nice one!
I dunno if I should be proud or embarrassed but the soundtrack is now playing in my head.

I'd give the nod to Elevator Action Returns. It takes the original formula and improves on it tremendously.

Similarly, there is also Volfied, which improves upon Qix.

@ Tuesday, September 19th 2023 by wordyfard | 3 points | Reply
Parasol Stars never got a fair shot. In the US it might as well have been invisible. There was no arcade version and the Nintendo ports were European region exclusives.
It's finally being ported to modern platforms and will probably be out by the end of the year. Maybe there's hope for it yet.

It's a acquired taste, but the vertical shooter Sky Shark (NES)/Flying Shark (Arcade).
Shmups went the way of bullet hell in the 90's, Sky Shark is a very hard non-bullet hell. There is no RNG in a shmup like Sky Shark, no randomness whatsoever, you need to fly the perfect path.
Similar to and a contemporary of 1943, the mechanics of getting hit are very different; 1943 is much more forgiving, Sky Shark demands perfection.
@ Tuesday, September 19th 2023 by BritOverThere | 8 points | Reply

Elevator Action and Jungle Hunt are super fun.
@ Tuesday, September 19th 2023 by paulsoleo | 11 points | Reply
Arkanoid is absolutely amazing, and will hold up indefinitely, but Atari and Steve Wozniak did it first with Breakout.
Arkanoid expanded on and perfected the idea, though—no doubt about that.
@ Tuesday, September 19th 2023 by Nejfelt | 1 point | Reply
True, Breakout was the first, but it definitely doesn't hold up. It's just repetitive and pretty boring.

@ Tuesday, September 19th 2023 by RonnieT49 | 37 points | Reply
The significance of Space Invaders can’t be underestimated. People looking back now imagine Pong kicking off the video game revolution.
But back in the day, it was Invaders that took gaming mainstream. It was everywhere. Chip shops. Squash courts. Hotels. Petrol stations. And Space Invaders was the cabinet that started all that.

When my father saw me playing videogames, no matter if Super Mario Bros, Populous or Final Fantasy VII he used to say "Are you playing again to the little Martians (Marcianitos)". And this was someone in rural Spain in the 80s. It was really an international success...

Space Invaders was the first "modern" arcade game. That alone would be enough to be historically noteworthy, but it also did so many unique things that we totally take for granted today - storing high scores, 3 lives, progressively more difficult levels, its use of sound. Pretty amazing.
@ Tuesday, September 19th 2023 by wondermega | 1 point | Reply
I have enjoyed a bunch of Taito games over the years, and there are several, but the only ones I've genuinely loved are Space Invaders and Arkanoid. Of those two, the one I still find myself returning to the most, is still Space Invaders (although I just know I'd play Arkanoid a lot more often if I had a dial controller).

I'm a big Taito fan. I honestly think they're kind of underrated in the West due to a lack of familiarity with some of their more interesting titles. They have a lot of solid oldies worth checking out. I really like Bubble Bobble, Bubble Bobble 2/Bubble Symphony, Darius Gaiden, G-Darius, Liquid Kids, Night Striker, Warrior Blade/Rastan Saga III, Metal Black, Kiki Kaikai, Space Gun, Growl/Runark, Plump Pop, RayForce, and of course the Arkanoid games. They're also responsible for the Densha de Go! Japanese train arcade games. One thing I love about pretty much all their games is they tend to be really charming and "unique," for lack of a better word. I dunno how to put my finger on it, but despite a pretty diverse and eclectic arcade portfolio they all have a particular Taito "feel." It seems like they were really working to differentiate themselves stylistically, and I think most of their catalogue is fun to pick up and play today even though their games are showing their age in 2023.
@ Wednesday, September 27th 2023 by QF_Dan | 2 points | Reply
Exactly, Taito is so underrated back then. Their games for the most part are pretty solid and you never hear too much bad reps from them. When you walk into an arcade and saw a game cabinet with the Blue Triangle of Happiness, you know you are in for a good time.
If Capcom, Konami or Sega didn't dominate the arcade scene, Taito could have been the one that becomes famous.

Arkanoid has to be the one.
Qix, Bubble Bubble, Space Invaders, and Bust-A-Move all have secure permanent spots in the video game pantheon. But Arkanoid, in all its various versions, is the one I keep coming back to the most out of all of them.
The almost forgotten "Arkanoid: Doh It Again" on the SNES is probably my favourite iteration.

Difficult to look beyond Bubble Bobble for me.
Didn't really even have to look up what else they did - Bubble Bobble is top 20 games of all time, all formats for me.
The general control and mechanics, the level design, the graduated difficulty over 100 levels and the pick ups to add interest were all close to perfection. And that's before you get into one of the friendliest, most cooperative 2P experiences of all time.

Rainbow Islands is my overall favourite and I played it a lot in my local arcade as a kid, but I loved all of the Bubble Bobble games. Enjoyed the later entries like Bubble Symphony and Bubble Memories a lot.
Shooter-wise though, I've been in love with Metal Black since I first played it...the intro with the animation of the pilot and ship, the music of the first level, the heading-into-orbit mini game, the moon twist at the end of level 2...argh it's just so good!

Jungle Hunt
Crazy Climber
Qix
I believe all of the mentioned games were made by Taito
Jungle Hunt and Qix was my favorite to play at a local bowling alley that had an arcade game room.
Crazy Climber was actually at a local sushi restaurant, and it was the cocktail table version.
Early 1980s if my memory is correct. Been a long time.
These were all coin op and not a cartridge for a home video game system. Had to spend 25 cents a game 😎

Growl is a hoot. It's an Indiana Jones ripoff set at the turn of the 20th century, where you free captive animals and beat up Arabs and women in 1980s business suits and blow away other bad guys with anachronistic rocket launchers and M16s. Plus you fight some worm clown alien thingee at the end.
It's like they said fuck being anachronistic and insane. Let's just throw all this shit in the pot and see what happens.

Front Line!
There was one at my neighborhood Payless Drugs so me and my friend would ride our bikes there just to play it (and the Sinistar at the pizza joint nextdoor). We only had limited quarters to play though... until I discovered that Canadian quarters would work on the machine. There was a large stockpile of those at my house for some reason. So we played the heck out of that machine!
Loved it when you got the tank and started blasting away!
Never found the game that satisfying later playing on emulators due to the lack of the combo rotating direction and joystick. Any good replacement for that?

The Flintstones (1993) for Sega Genesis, or as I like to call it, 14 GRAND DAD. It's one of several high-quality games based on the hit Hanna-Barbera stone age sitcom. You play as Fred Flintstone and travel through six exciting levels to help his friends and family; Leaf Rock, Swimming Pool, Desert Drive, Dino Express, Fire Rock, and Hard Rock.
I'd love for Taito to bring all five of their Flintstones games to modern consoles in a compilation. It would include The Rescue of Dino and Hoppy and The Surprise at Dinosaur Peak for NES, King Rock Treasure Island for Game Boy, the aforementioned 1993 Genesis game, and The Treasure of Sierra Madrock for SNES.

Bubble Symphony aka Bubble Bobble 2. It improved on everything from the first game. Controls are better, visuals have nice details, gameplay is much accessible to new players as the level designs here were better than the OG, there aren't much levels that can make you feel confused about what to do next. Progression is also changed for the better, you just have collect 3 music notes to get a key within each world. Collect all 4 keys and you can access the final world to get the good ending. Miles better than the complicated one in OG.
