When I was younger (mid 80s to mid 90s), I remember playing an arcade game that was similar in gameplay to Defender, but it had half a dozen to a dozen layers of parallax scrolling. I also remember there being a lot of purple?

That's all I got to go on.

And ideas?

Xevious

Xevious is a vertical scroller (with absolutely no purple). Defender is a side scroller.

Stargate was very similar to Defender but a dozen layers? I can't remember that.

Quite a bit newer. I remember it looking pretty good for the time - 16 or maybe even 32 bit.

I think the stage select was different planets?
